In-Depth Information
Give this region a miss and you'll regret it. Yes, the trees have long since been felled,
replaced by agricultural tracts on the fecund glacial till. And its population centers have al-
ways—unfairly—battled Rust Belt associations. Yet within a short bike trip one can find
bustling city life, ethnic neighborhoods, gorgeous vistas from an enormous expanse of
coastline, and, yes, classic pastoral dairyland.
This region's highlights could easily be explored in a weekend. The best thing would be to
base yourself in the famed resort community of
Lake Geneva,
as it is very central and a
legendary place of respite.
FromLakeGeneva,mosttravelersbearnortheasttowardMilwaukee,butWIS67would
be a lovely day drive north to
Old World Wisconsin
or the
Kettle Moraine State Forest-
Southern Unit,
then past the gem of Native American history at
Aztalan State Park,
and
finally Watertown's grand
Octagon house
(and ice cream).
Any route you choose can end easily enough at the birder's heaven:
Horicon Marsh
National Wildlife Refuge.
