Southeastern Wisconsin wasn't the first doorway to Wisconsin for Europeans, but it be-
camethemajordoorwaythathelpeditbecomeastate.Thusitremainstoday,agatewayfor
most visitors. Driving into the Badger State through Chicago, the centrifugal force of the
interstate arcs of the Windy City whip one into a region of prairies, lakes, farms, and most
of Wisconsin's people. Over 150 years ago, steamships laden with European immigrants
landed at Milwaukee and the southern ports, where about 90 percent of Wisconsinites live
today.
