Sights
The old mansions that festoon the harbour are a visual feast, and many have been re-
stored to their former glory, while others rest in a complete state of disrepair.
The impressive stone clock tower at the southern side of the harbour is a gift from the
expat Halki community in Florida.
The Church of Agios Nikolaos has the tallest belfry in the Dodecanese and boasts an
impressive pebbled courtyard on the east side. The Traditional House ( 22460 45284;
adult €3; 11am-3pm & 6-8pm Mon-Fri) offers a glimpse into the past in this recreation of
an island cottage. Follow the road up the hill past the bakery.

There are few accommodation options open to the ad hoc traveller so book ahead in the

Captain's House PENSION $

er's house has three lovely rooms with original 19th-century high ceilings and wood
floors, and features antique clocks and pictures of old schooners. There's also a terrific
sun terrace with great harbour views, plus a courtyard to chill in.
St Nicolas Boutique Hotel BOUTIQUE HOTEL $$$

sponge factory has 20 refined rooms with chic furniture and private balconies, and
there's a palatial marbled lobby and contemporary restaurant. A few yards away on the
old loading pier are steps leading into the sea for swimming.
Eating
Maria's Taverna TAVERNA $
(mains €9) On the watefront in the corner by the post office, Maria's sits under the shade
of a fig tree and has fresh fish, langoustine, lamb stew, mousakas and traditional
homemade Halki spaghetti.
