Around Karpenisi
From Karpenisi a scenic mountain road leads south for 34km towards the village of
Prousos and the 12th-century Moni Panagias Proussiotissas ( 22370 80705) . Pilgrims
flock here on 23 August for the Feast of the Assumption, to drink holy water from the
spring and to step into the cavelike katholikon (principal church of a monastery), which
claims to have a miracle-working icon of the Virgin Mary.
Just 14km south of Karpenisi are the twin villages of Mikro Horio (Little Village),
with a couple of good tavernas, and Megalo Horio (Big Village). This scenic village
boasts traditional stone houses and a charming Folklore Museum (
