Omeo
POP 487
High in the hills, historic Omeo is a pretty town reached after the winding drive up from
the coast or down from the mountains. This is the southern access route to Mt Hotham and
Falls Creek and the main town on the eastern section of the Great Alpine Rd. The road is
sometimes snowbound in winter; always check conditions before heading this way and
carry chains.
In the gold-rush days of the 1850s, Omeo was the wildest and most remote gold field in
the state. It attracted many Chinese diggers whose legacy you can see today on the Oriental
Claims Walk . Stay a while to wander the steep main street and breathe in the crisp mountain
air.
Sleeping & Eating
The scenic Victoria Falls Camping Area, off the Great Alpine Rd, 18km west of Omeo,
has pit toilets and a picnic area. In town, there's a bakery, a couple of cafes and
takeaways.
