Stockmann Department Store:
Finally, you'll come to the prestigious
Stockmann department store—Finland's answer to Harrods or Macy's. Stock-
mann is the biggest, best, and oldest department store in town, with a great
gourmet supermarket in the basement (see listing in “Shopping in Helsinki”).
Just beyond is Helsinki's main intersection, where Esplanade and Mannerhei-
mintie meet. (Mannerheimintie is named for Carl Gustaf Mannerheim, the Fin-
nish war hero who frustrated the Soviets in World War II.)
