In-Depth Information
here, any bus starting with #4—such as #401—takes you to Slussen; bus #53
goes to Slussen, Gamla Stan, and the train station; and bus #71 hits Slussen,
Gamla Stan, and the Opera House).
Frihamnen is a sprawling, drab industrial port zone used by cruise liners
as well as overnight boats to Helsinki, Tallinn, St. Petersburg, and other Baltic
cities. Fortunately, most of the cruises are concentrated in one part of the port,
typically using one of three berths: Berth 638, the main dock, has the only
dedicated terminal building (with a TI desk and gift shops, but no ATM or In-
ternet access). Berth 650 is at the next pier over. And berth 634 shares the
same pier as berth 638, but is closer to the mainland. From all three berths,
the best strategy is to walk down the pier to reach the main harborfront road
(follow the blue line painted on the pavement; figure a 10-minute walk from
berth 638, and a 5-minute walk from either of the other two). Along this road
you'll find a TI kiosk (red building with white trim); a public bus stop (the
best way into town—see next); and hop-on, hop-off bus tours (pricey but con-
venient, for details see here ) . If you need cash, you'll find an ATM upstairs in
the Frihamnsterminalen (the terminal building for Tallink Silja and St. Peter
Line boats, at the base of the pier for berths 638 and 634).
From Frihamnen , the public bus is your most affordable way into the cen-
ter. From the bus stop along the main road, bus #76 zips you to several ma-
jor sights in town, including Djurgårdsbron (at the bridge a short walk from
the Vasa Museum and other Djurgården sights), Nybroplan, Kungsträdgården
(near the Opera House), Slottsbacken (by the palace in Gamla Stan), Ränt-
mästartrappan (at the southern end of Gamla Stan), and Slussen (4-7/hour
Mon-Fri, 2-3/hour Sat, none Sun). On Saturday, you may be better off taking
bus #1, which cuts across the top of Östermalm and Norrmalm to the train
station (every 5-8 minutes daily). You can't buy bus tickets on board, so be
sure to get them before you reach the stop—buy one at either TI (inside the
terminal or at the booth near the bus stop), or use the automated machine at
the bus stop (accepts credit cards). You can also take a taxi (figure about 150
kr to the Vasa Museum/Djurgården, or 235 kr to the Old Town or City Hall).
If your cruise begins in Stockholm, you'll probably depart from Fri-
hamnen(butconfirmwithyourcruiseline).Figureabout200-250krfora taxi
from downtown. It's much cheaper to take the bus: You can take bus #1 from
