Exchange Rates
I've priced things in local currencies throughout the topic. Here are the
rough exchange rates for each country. (Check www.oanda.com for the
latest rates.)
$1 equals about...
6 Danish kroner (1 krone equals about $0.17)
6 Norwegian kroner (1 krone equals about $0.17)
7 Swedish kronor (1 krona equals about $0.15)
0.77 euro in Finland and Estonia (€1 equals about $1.30)
Kroner are decimalized: 100 øre = 1 krone. Kroner from one Scand-
inavian country are not accepted in the next (except at foreign-exchange
bureaus andbanks, andthen onlybills). Standard abbreviations are Danish
krone, DKK; Swedish krona, SEK; and Norwegian kroner, NOK. I'll keep
it simple. For all three countries, I'll use the krone abbreviation “kr.” Fin-
land and Estonia's currency is the euro (€).
To roughly convert Danish and Norwegian prices into US dollars, mul-
tiply by two, then drop a zero (e.g., 15 kr = about $3, 100 kr = about $20).
In Sweden, divide prices by 6 (100 kr = about $16). So, that 250-kr Nor-
wegiansweaterisabout$50,andyour360-krdinnerinStockholmisabout
$60. To roughly convert prices in euros to dollars, add 30 percent (€20 =
about $26).
