Roskilde
Denmark's roots, both Viking and royal, are on display in Roskilde (ROSS-
killa), a pleasant town 18 miles west of Copenhagen. Eight hundred years ago,
Roskilde was the seat of Denmark's royalty—its center of power. Today the
town that introduced Christianity to Denmark in A.D. 980 is most famous for
hosting northern Europe's biggest annual rock/jazz/folk festival (early July,
www.roskilde-festival.dk ). Wednesday and Saturday are flower/flea/produce
market days (8:00-14:00).
Getting There: Roskilde is an easy side-trip from Copenhagen by train
(1-3/hour, 30 minutes). Trains headed to Ringsted, Nykøbing, or Lindholm all
