Women's Residences
Members of the fairer sex can also take advantage of the cheap accommodations offered by women's residences.
These throwbacks to a more genteel era generally don't allow gentleman callers above the parlor levels, nor do
they permit boozing (some residences even have curfews). However, rates are lower than New York's multi-
gender hotels, and for newcomers to the city, it's a great way to make friends.
The Markle Evangeline Residence for Women Built by the Salvation Army, the Markle has been providing
women with a viable alternative to the New York housing mire for 80 years. The rules are predictably strict—no
alcohol, no smoking, no men under 55 inside—and the rooms will never be described as spacious, but a resident
gets free Wi-Fi and two squares a day. A great location on top of access to a TV room, computer labs, a rooftop
garden, and organized social activities help justify the somewhat high rates. Note: More communal souls can
save cash by opting for shared doubles or quads. Two references, an application, and a security deposit of $1,210
to $1,650 are required for long-term stays. Residency is open to women between the ages of 18 and 50.
123 W. 13th St., btw. Sixth and Seventh aves. 212/242-2400. www.themarkle.org . Long-term monthly (minimum 90 days): $1,620-$1,735
single; $1450-$1,615 double; $1,180-$1,230 quad. 280 beds. Facilities: Private bathroom; in-room phone; 24-hr. security; maid service (once a
week); roof garden; computer lab; TV lounge; laundry. Subway: 1/2/3 or F/M to 14th St.; L to Sixth Ave.
Sacred Heart Residence In a historic brownstone right across from the General Theological Seminary, this
Chelsea boarding house holds down a prime location (Jack Kerouac wrote the third draft of OntheRoad just up
the block). The Congregation of San Jose de la Montana administers the building, providing temporary lodging
for women 18 to 30 years old. You'll need to apply in advance and put down a $50 reservation, and there's a
curfew (11pm on weeknights, midnight on the weekends). Rent is due in advance, $350 a week, which includes
weekday breakfasts and dinners. Bathrooms are shared.
Reception is closed on the weekends, so plan
a weekday arrival.
432 W. 20th St., btw. Ninth and Tenth aves. 212/929-5790. www.sacredheartresidence.com . 28 rooms. Single or share of double, $350 weekly.
Two meals a day on weekdays. Subway: C/E to 23rd St.
The Webster Apartments One of Macy's major shareholders gave a little back to working women by endowing
this Midtown residence. Interns and working students pay only $285 a week, and employed women are charged
by a sliding scale that tops out at $315 a week. If you're here on business (and female), it's just $85 a night, with
a 3-night minimum. Bathrooms are in the hallway, but sharing has its advantages when it comes to enjoying the
large walled garden and rooftop plot. You need to fill out an application to get in (the average stay is about 3
months).
419 W. 34th St., btw. Ninth and Tenth aves. 212/967-9000. www.websterapartments.org . 373 rooms. Single rooms: $285-$315 weekly, shared
bathrooms, breakfast and dinner included. Facilities: Roof garden; TV lounge; maid service (once a week); laundry. Subway: A/C/E to 34th St./Penn
Station.

NYC's hirsute astute take advantage of salon training sessions. Both students and pros need live heads to demon-
strate on, and in exchange for your modeling, they'll provide all kinds of services for little or no money. Though
there's no guarantee you'll get an expert cut, a lot of salon students in New York have the scissor skills to eclipse
the masters. In addition to cuts, coloring services are sometimes available. Some salons want to look you over
first (it helps if you've got a sympathetic face and a surplus of hair begging for a snipping), but generally it's
pretty easy to get your grooming on the house. Note: Many salons need models, but not all like to advertise it.
