If you've got your eye on a prohibitively expensive spot, give them a call and see if they can use you. For a great
online source, check out www.salonapprentice.com , which lists dozens of volunteer hair model opportunities
every week.
Salon Stylings
Aveda Institute New York The popular environmentally conscious spa Aveda offers up its many services at deep
discounts if you go through the students at the institute. Haircuts, coloring, blowouts, perms, facials, and waxing
are all available. The prices aren't dirt cheap ($20 for a cut and simple style, $20 for a 30-min facial), but they're
relative bargains compared to the rest of the neighborhood. If you want to model for a student, you can find free
cuts and deeply discounted coloring at both the institute and at Aveda Academy classes.

Bumble and bumble.University With classic New York perversity, the Meatpacking District has
morphed into the city's trendiest district. Bumble and bumble's salon is right in the thick of things, but you can
partake of their services for no money down. Bb. U's stylist training program puts on model calls for heads of
hair deemed worthy in preevaluation (fill out the form online to wangle your invitation). If you make it through,
they'll fuss over you for 2 hours or so, leaving you with a new cut and style. Once you're in the program, you can
stay tapped into the gravy train with a follow-up every 3 or 4 months. (If you make the cut for cuts, you'll also be
eligible for free color work.) You must be willing to get more than a trim, though they'll consult with you first to
figure out what works. Tips aren't even necessary.

Christine Valmy International School of Esthetics, Makeup and Nail Artistry What you give up in experien-
ce, you gain in price here. Facials are a great deal. Instructors do the supervising while students do the work. A
full hour and a half facial ($38 on Sat and weeknights) is only $27 if you come in between 9:30am and 3:30pm on
a weekday. Call a week ahead for an appointment.

The Dealin' Barbers of Cheap Street
Barber colleges offer cut-rate cuts. The level of experience varies from student to student, so I don't recommend going for
anything too tricky. In fact, you might limit these visits to summertime—when hair grows back quickest.
AmericanBarberInstitute Haircuts are only $6.99, though you'll have to sign a waiver before going under the shears.
(The same price will get you a facial massage.) 252 W. 29th St., btw. Seventh and Eighth aves. 212/290-2289.

You can get cheap cuts from pros, too. The cuts will run you a bit more, but you can rest easier knowing the scissors are
in experienced hands.
AstorPlaceHairstylist This family-run basement lair offers a vast array of barbers and hairstylists. Cuts are professional,
and a lot more stylish than you might expect for $14. (Astor Place has had charge of my locks for years, and I look like
a million bucks.) 2 Astor Place, btw. Broadway and Lafayette St. 212/475-9854. www.astorplacehairnyc.com . Subway:
