Commandery

(Komenda; Trg Svobode 1) The Commandery of the Teutonic Knights, the grey building
with stone reliefs across the square to the southeast of the castle, was originally built in
the mid-17th century. Opposite are the foundations of Črnomelj's original castle.
LANDMARK
Parish Church of St Peter

(Cerkev Sv Petra; Ulica Staneta Rozmana) The church dates to the 13th century but what
you'll see today is a standard-issue baroque structure with a single spire. There are Roman
tombstones built into the walls, and on the western exterior above the main entrance, is a
fresco of St Christopher.

WINE TASTING
Črnomelj Wine Cellar

(Črnomajska Klet; 305 65 30; Ulica Mirana Jarca) The wine cellar, in the basement
of the beautifully renovated music school, offers tastings from the Bela Krajina wine-
growing district with belokranjska pogača (local flatbread) and cheese for €7 (though you
might have to join a group).
Hiking
A popular hike starts at the northern end of Ulica 21 Oktobra; it goes for 18km northwest
to Mirna Gora (1047m), where you can stay 1000m high at Category III Planinski Dom
na Mirni Gori ( 041 910 357, 306 85 73; Tue-Sun) , with nine rooms and three
dorms.
