Basel but it attracts more than 30,000 art lovers, more than 200 exhibitors and increasing
amounts of international attention.

Salone Internazionale del Mobile
( www.cosmit.it ) The world's most prestigious (and profit-driven) furniture fair is held annu-
ally at Fieramilano (Rho), with satellite exhibitions in Zona Tortona. Alongside the
Salone, runs the Fuorisalone ( http://fuorisalone.it ; literally, the outdoor lounge), which in-
corporates the dozens of spontaneous design-related events, parties, exhibits and shows
that animate the entire city.

Milano Film Festival
( www.milanofilmfestival.it/eng ) September sees 10 days of international features, shorts and ret-
rospectives at the Teatro Piccolo, as well as open-air screenings, music and parties at
Parco Sempione.
La Nivola e il Santo Chiodo
In September, the Archbishop of Milan ascends to the Duomo's chancel roof in a cloud-
adorned papier mâché basket; he's up there to retrieve what is supposedly one of the nails
from Christ's cross (fashioned, bizarrely, by Constantine into a horse's bridle).

Festa di Sant'Ambrogio & Fiera degli Obei Obei
The feast day of Milan's patron saint is celebrated on 7 December with a large Christmas
fair. It goes by the name Obej! Obej! (pronounced o-bay, o-bay). Stalls sell regional foods,
especially sweets, and seasonal handicrafts in the grounds of Castello Sforzesco.
