Located 2km up in the
hills above Anse Royale, this lush spice garden owes its existence to Pierre Poivre, the
French spice entrepreneur. There is a self-guided walk around the 35-hectare orchard-
crossed-with-forest. The planter's house contains a one-room
museum
and there's a pleasant
cafe-restaurant with smashing views down to the coast. Homemade jams, marmalade and
spices are available at the gift shop.

On this popular tour
you learn the colourful story behind the island's main distillery and about the rum-making
process. The one-hour tour runs at 11.30am and 1.30pm and concludes with a tasting and
an opportunity to purchase bottles of rum at factory prices. It also features a well-regarded
bar-restaurant.

Beaches
The oft-overlooked, little-known
Fairyland Beach
offers shimmering waters and great snor-
kelling around tiny
Île Souris
, just offshore. Other good strips of sand are found at
Anse Roy-
ale
,
Anse Bougainville
,
Anse Parnel
and
Anse Forbans
, further south.
Sleeping
The east coast may not be the sexiest part of the island, but we've unearthed a smattering
of excellent-value (by Seychellois standards), family-run ventures from where you can
easily reach the western coast, by bus or by car.
