tower and mock-up ship restaurant, the four-star Sirius is an unmistakable landmark. Set
on a narrow curve of beach, it's a typical resort-style hotel, and there are indoor and out-
door pools, a kids' play area and a spa.
International House of Scientists Frederic Joliot-Curie $$
( 361 161; www.ihsvarna.com ; s/d 55/80 lv, renovated 85/95 lv; ) Look-
ing (and sounding) like a remnant of another era, this '60s tower block west of the bus
stop nevertheless offers good value, and it's definitely worth the extra leva for the neater
modernised rooms. It has a mineral-water pool, a pharmacy and a cactus garden. Various
balneological treatments are available.

Hotel Panorama $$
( 361 025; www.panoramahotel.bg ; s/d 60/74 lv; ) Among the cheaper options,
this older establishment faces the main road. Rooms are comfortable, if a little dated, but
most have balconies and sea views. There are gardens at the back with steps leading down
towards the beachfront area.

(mains 6-12 lv; ) Near the bus stop, this folksy restaurant features traditional Bulgarian
and German fare, so there are lots of sausages. Fish dishes are also available.

Getting There & Away
Buses 8, 9 and 109 leave regularly from the bus stop outside Varna's tourist information
centre ( Click here ) to Sveti Konstantin (1.60 lv, one hour). Bus 409 stops on the main
road, near Hotel Panorama, on the way between Varna and Golden Sands.
Golden Sands (Zlatni Pyasâtsi)
Golden Sands (Zlatni Pyasâtsi), 18km up the coast from Varna, was Bulgaria's original
purpose-built resort, with the first hotel opening here in 1957. Today it's Bulgaria's
second-largest coastal resort, with a 4km stretch of sandy beach, and some of the best
nightlife on the coast. Virtually everyone staying in the resort will be on a prebooked
