In-Depth Information
Sveti Konstantin
052
Sveti Konstantin is a small, sedate beach resort about 9km northeast of Varna, with hotels
attractively spaced out amongst parkland. Established in 1946 under the name of Druzhba
(Friendship), it was later renamed Sveti Konstantin i Elena, but is now more commonly
known simply as Sveti Konstantin. It's less commercial than other resorts and has long
been popular with older holidaymakers; it still has a number of 'rest homes' for retired
civil servants and trade-union members, and the resort is famous for its therapeutic miner-
al waters and health treatments. There are several new resort hotels geared towards young
families, but this isn't the place for water sports or raucous nightlife.
There are no street names in Sveti Konstantin and hotels are poorly signposted, al-
though there is a map on a signboard by the bus stop. The centre of the resort is along the
main road between the bus stop and the beach. Another road runs east from the bus stop to
the Sunny Day Complex at the far end of the beach.
Sights & Activities
MONASTERY
Sveti Sveti Konstantin & Elena Monastery
( www.varnamonastery.bg ; dawn-dusk, closed morning Sun) This tiny church was built
in the early 18th century on the site of a holy healing spring, though it has been rebuilt and
remodelled since then. The spring remains, under the communion table. The church
houses relics of St Valentine, as well as its patron saints.
Beach
Much of the beach is carved up into private stretches of sand appropriated by the various
hotels, but there are plenty of areas accessible to nonguests too. Parasols and sun beds cost
6 to 7 lv each. However, all the beaches tend to be small and bordered by jetties, breakwa-
ters and rocky outcrops. There are no water sports available here.
