DRAGOMIRNA MONASTERY
Just 10km north of Suceava in Mitocul Dragomirnei, the 60-nun-strong Dragomirna
Monastery ( www.manastireadragomirna.ro ; admission 5 lei) was founded between 1602
and 1609 by scholar, calligrapher, artist and bishop Anastasie Crimca. The intricate rope
lacing around the main church's side (1609) represents the Holy Trinity, and the short-
lived unification of the Moldavian, Wallachian and Transylvanian principalities in 1600.
Dragomirna's Museum of Medieval Art contains carved cedar crosses mounted in sil-
ver- gilt filigree and numerous religious texts.
The monastery hosts pilgrims. Drive or take a taxi from Suceava (20 to 30 lei).
HUMOR MONASTERY
Founded by Chancellor Theodor Bubuiog under Moldavian Prince Petru Rareş, Humor
Monastery (Mănăstirea Humorului; admission adult/student 5/2 lei; 8am-7pm sum-
mer, to 4pm winter) , built in 1530, is surrounded by ramparts, with a three-level brick-
and-wood lookout tower. Ascend it for views from the lookout deck. The narrow walls en-
closing the last stretch of stairway were designed so that defending soldiers could kill off
attacking Turks one by one.
