and still lifes, plus abstract art, modern cityscapes, and sculptures and tapestries. The
building houses a small Ethnographic Museum .

square, the lovely, but sombre St John's Church (1498) has a 10m-high bell tower.

ture with advanced pottery skills that lived in the area between 5500 BC and 2750 BC. A
book on the Cucuteni, partly in English, is available (30 lei).

This museum documents local history from the Stone Age through the Moldavian princes
and more recent developments.

Bal Shem Tov Wooden Synagogue

Just north of the Princely Court, this 1766 synagogue was built over the foundations of a
1490 predecessor. The tiny interior is decorated with Jewish artefacts, restored frescoes
and paintings. If closed, walk 20m down the alley and around the corner to Str Petru
Rareş 7 and inquire within. Alternatively, your hotel can phone the local Jewish commu-
nity's leadership for you.
