Thracian Tombs

Bulgarians are rightly proud of their Thracian heritage, and the ancient tribes who
produced slave leader Spartacus and the semidivine, lyre-playing Orpheus were fantastic-
ally skilled artists and craftspeople. Today, the most obvious reminders of their culture are
the elaborate tombs that have been unearthed across southern and central Bulgaria. The

, erected for a 4th-
century-BC king, and adorned with remarkably well-preserved murals of chariot racing and
feasting. It is now a Unesco World Heritage site.
