The Perils of Plum Brandy
13 Big meals traditionally begin with a shot of Romanian moonshine, ţuică , but treat this
innocent-looking liquid with a measure of respect. Home-brewed batches can weigh in at
as much as 60% alcohol, and the wallop can be fast and furious. Classic ţuică is usually
distilled from plums - purists say only plums - but we've seen other fruits, like apricots
and pears, employed to this nefarious end. In smaller villages, you'll likely be offered some
of grandpa's best, or look for it sold in plastic bottles at roadside rest stops by friendly old
ladies with a glint in their eye. Noroc!
