What to Wear
Outside of glamorous hotspots such as Monaco, Cannes and St-Tropez, fashion is pretty
relaxed in the south of France. Jeans are as universal here as they are in most of Western
Europe. In winter, you'll need to layer up as it gets cold. A waterproof coat and sturdy
shoes are a good idea for all-weather sightseeing. In summer, shorts, skirts and dresses are
fine.
For evening wear, smart casual is the norm. Upmarket places insist on shoes (not train-
ers) and trousers or dresses instead of jeans; jackets and ties are a prerequisite for men in
Monaco, while high heels for ladies are the 'open sesame' to Cannes and St-Tropez'
trendiest bars.
Bars and clubs usually have a cloakroom for bags and coats.
