A
buyout by Russian billionaire Elena Baturina has breathed new life into this quayside
hotel, courtesy of a €7m refurbishment that has seen the rooms given a contemporary
makeover and the already elegant public spaces a facelift. King-size beds (with Serta mat-
tresses), 40-inch LED TVs, free wi-fi and Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries are just some of
the hotel's offerings.
Now operated by Hilton Doubletree, you won't sleep in more luxurious surroundings
anywhere on the north side.

This landmark hotel shed its traditional granny's parlour look with a major overhaul
some years ago. Despite its brighter, smarter, modern appearance and a fabulous open-
plan foyer, its loyal clientele - elderly groups on shopping breaks to the capital and well-
heeled Americans - continues to find it charming. Rooms are spacious and well serviced,
though the decor is a little brash.

The ghostly writing of Irish-Japanese author Lafcadio Hearn may have influenced
the Gothic-style interior of his former home. A dark-walled, gilt-framed foyer with
jingling chandelier leads into 82 individually designed comfy (but cramped) rooms. It
shares a dining room with the Globetrotters Tourist Hostel (

) next door.
