In-Depth Information
Mignon Guest House GUESTHOUSE $
( 242-322-4771; 12 Market St; s/d $55/60; ) Run by a very sweet (though slightly
hard-of-hearing!) elderly Greek couple, this 2nd-floor guesthouse is a bargain in the heart
of downtown. Six guestrooms are bare-bones but clean, with personal air-conditioning
units and cable TVs. Shared bathrooms are in the hallway. Two locked iron gates will make
you feel safe.
Towne Hotel HOTEL $
( 242-322-8450; www.townehotel.com ; 40 George St; r $70; ) Friendly man-
agement and a kitschy Junkanoo-themed bar make this otherwise ordinary 46-room hotel
feel more cheerful than it might otherwise. Motel-style rooms have tile floors and small,
but clean, bathrooms; the nicer rooms have balconies, too. Spice things up by trying to
make the resident lobby parrot say 'Hello.'
Quality Inn Junkanoo Beach HOTEL $
( 242-322-1515; www.qualityinn.com ; cnr W Bay & Nassau Sts; r $95; ) Cur-
rently the cheapest but least appealing of the western downtown options, this aging tower
was undergoing renovations when we visited. Hopefully the dingy, motel-style rooms will
be dramatically updated.
Cable Beach
West of downtown, Cable Beach is New Providence's most popular stretch of sand, lined
with dozens of beachfront resorts and time-share complexes. Changes are afoot in the area
as the $2.6 billion Baha Mar megaresort, which hopes to rival Atlantis, inches further to-
wards reality. Two of the beach's biggest hotels - the Sheraton and the Wyndham - are
already transitioning towards becoming part of the Baha Mar complex, which means some
newly renovated rooms and slick new restaurants.
Wyndham Nassau Resort & Crystal Palace Casino RESORT $$
( 242-327-6200; www.wyndhamnassauresort.com ; W Bay St; r $199; )
With its retro-futuristic peach and turquoise towers, this gaudy behemoth resort dominates
the Cable Beach scene. Rooms are more tasteful than the exterior might suggest, with slick
modern furniture and private balconies. Fun-lovers will revel in the Crystal Palace Casino,
a cabaret nightclub, golf course, tennis and squash courts, shopping plaza and several bars
and restaurants. The hotel also has a kids' club, with supervised activities and theme days.
The landscaped beachfront courtyard has a 100ft-long waterslide, Jacuzzi and swim-up bar
- what else do you need?
