In-Depth Information
( 242-339-2140/1666; r $80; ) This pleasant place offers three decent rooms each
with a fridge, TV and microwave in a colonial style house some way from the center of
town.
Cozy's BAHAMIAN $$
( 242-339-1440; William St; snacks $4-9, mains $10-12; lunch & dinner Mon-Sat)
This place doesn't really live up to its name, but by local standards it's like the Ritz, with
tablecloths and a relatively wide choice of food. Lunch is the best time to eat here, where
full meals are served, while in the evenings you're limited to a range of smaller snacks such
as burgers and hot wings. Look for the violent lime-green building.
A couple of other eating options include Inagua Island Restaurant ( 242-339-1414;
mains $10-16), a very friendly family-run place where you'll find free wi-fi and a relatively
wide selection of dishes. S & L Restaurant & Bar ( 242-339-1677; Kortwright St;
mains $10-15) is another place to eat as well as being a popular local bar with a pool table.
FLAMING FLAMINGOS
The West Indian (or roseate) flamingo is restricted to Great Inagua, the Turks
and Caicos, Bonaire, portions of the Yucatán Peninsula, and Cuba. Around
10,000 of these leggy birds inhabit 12-mile-long Lake Rosa in the Bahamas Na-
tional Trust Park. In season (November through June) the birds can be seen in
great flocks in the park, most magnificently, taking off en masse in a pink bliz-
zard. The birds mate in December and January and nest from February to April.
Each spring a bird count is undertaken. You're welcome to volunteer, simply
contact the Bahamas National Trust ( www.bnt.bs ) head office in Nassau.
Inagua General Store (Gregory St; 8am-6pm Mon-Fri, until 1pm Sat, closed Sun)
is the pricey but surprisingly well-stocked island supermarket located in the same building
as the Moreton Salt Company Main House.
Information
There is a Bank of the Bahamas branch (but no ATM), a post office and police station on
Gregory St. There's a Government medical clinic on Victoria St.
Getting There & Around
Matthew Town Airport ( 242-339-1680) is 2 miles north of town. There are rarely tax-
is at the airport, but it's easy enough to get a lift into town on arrival, as the thrice-weekly
flights from Nassau are big events here and the airport is always crowded.
