In-Depth Information
Matthew Town is the only settlement on the island and is a center for the Morton Salt
Company, who produces nearly a million pounds of salt here annually. Sport fishing and
scuba-diving fans will enjoy these pristine waters but will need their own gear.
MATTHEW TOWN
POP 452
The white gold of former years is still a regular income for most of the town's folk, while
others get by on fishing and farming. The faded bungalows and old two-story whitewashed
houses with green shuttered windows make up the town center along with a few shops and
bars.
Sights & Activities
The small Moreton Museum ( 242-339-1863; Gregory St) contains profiles on salt
production and native fauna, including flamingos. Ask the librarian to open it for you if it's
closed, or call ahead to arrange a visit.
The Great Inagua Lighthouse ( 242-339-1370; Southwest Point) is one of four ker-
osene lighthouses in the country that must be wound by hand every 1½ hours throughout
the night.
Sleeping & Eating
Morton Salt Company Main House GUESTHOUSE $
( 242-339-1267; Gregory St; d $60-90; ) You'll feel like a traveling salesperson
in a 1930s American novel if you stay at this endearing and well-maintained two-story
guesthouse. Rooms are well equipped and staff are friendly when they're around, although
unfortunately it's right opposite the very noisy town power plant, which may bother light
sleepers. It's right in the center of town.
Enrica's Inn GUESTHOUSE $
( 242-339-2127, 3339-1271; cnr Victoria & Taylor Sts; $75-110; ) The three new
and beautifully maintained wooden houses look very swish by local standards and are the
most comfortable option in town. Each house contains five rooms, and there's a communal
kitchen for guests to use.
