In-Depth Information
( 242-357-0008, www.higginslanding.com ; r incl dinner $495; ) This exquisite
refuge from the world can almost justify its eye-wateringly high prices with its easy charm
and genteel comfort. There are just four very private cottages (one of which accommod-
ates two couples in separate rooms) and each boasts antique wooden furniture, white tim-
ber walls and private decks for sunbathing. The feel is much more of a private club than a
resort here, with most things, from snorkeling equipment to use of the kayaks and the small
gym, being free. Dinner is an elaborate affair, and the restaurant is considered to be one of
the Exumas' best. The entire place is powered by solar energy and only rainwater is used
in the bathrooms.
St Francis Resort RESORT $$$
( 242-557-9629; www.stfrancisresort.com ; r incl breakfast $260; ) This small get-
away favorite is the second hotel on Stocking Island, and very lovely it is too. With 5 miles
of sandy beach right on the doorstep and wonderful isolation to recommend it, it's easy to
see why St Francis gets rave reviews. The rooms are not exciting, but they are spacious and
comfortable, all with private decks overlooking the sea.
Chat n Chill Bar & Grill GRILL $$
( 242-336-2800; mains $15; 11am-7pm) This spirited and affable outdoor bar is a
favorite with the yachtie crowd who descend on it each lunchtime for the simple menu of
barbequed ribs, burgers and fresh fish and to share beers over tall stories of their morning's
adventures. The Sunday pig roast ($15) is one of Exuma's social highlights; book in ad-
vance and enjoy a perfect Sunday afternoon on the beach here.
Peace & Plenty Beach Club GRILL $$
( 242-336-2551; mains $8-15; lunch) This great beach club serves up delicious bur-
gers that keep both locals and traveling yachties returning again and again. It enjoys a fant-
astic position on the suitably named Hamburger Beach.
North of George Town
queen's hwy runs north of george town through a string of small settlements made up of
traditional homes painted in caribbean pastels and shaded by palms. beautiful beaches line
the shore, the very best of which are Hooper's Bay Beach and Cocoplum Beach . Access
can be tricky as there are lots of private houses blocking beach access from the main road.
Ask locals, or look for the sporadic 'Beach Access' signs.
A mile offshore opposite Mt Thompson sits Three Sisters Rock , a trio of craggy
boulders rising from the sea. They're supposedly named for three sisters who each drowned
herself here for the shame of bearing a child out of wedlock.
