In-Depth Information
fully equipped cottages have sweet stone and tile bathrooms that are bigger than many
NYC apartments.
Bahama House Inn B&B $$
( 242-333-2201; www.bahamahouseinn.com ; Dun- more St, Dunmore Town; r
$165-210; ) On a hilly side street, this cotton candy pink colonial has a pleasingly
ramshackle charm. Its seven rooms are clean and simple, with tile floors and chenille bed-
spreads. A small garden tiki bar and a homey sitting room with a TV and couches add cozy
touches.
Valentine's Resort HOTEL $$$
( 242-333-2142; www.valentinesresort.com ; Bay St, Dunmore Town; r $295-875;
) The suites and rental apartments at this marina-side mini-village have a feature-
less corporate feel that seems at odds with Briland's arty, laid-back vibe. But with kitchens,
comfy contemporary furniture and slick modern amenities, they're nice for long-term stays.
Baretta's Seashell Inn MOTEL $$
( 242-333-2361; www.barettasseashellinn.com ; Nesbit St, Harbour Island; r $120-250;
) Just east of Dunmore Town, this friendly family-run motel has tidy rooms done up
in faux wood and peach tones overlooking an overgrown garden.
EATING & DRINKING
Harbour Island alone probably has more fine dining options than all the Out Islands com-
bined. Reservations are definitely needed at the nicer places. Some of the island's best
meals are served at the shacks lining Bay St north of the harbor. There's always a line for
Bahamian fare at Harry O's and people risk missing the ferry for a fresh, tart bowl of
conch salad at Queen Conch .
Arthur's Bakery & Café BAKERY $
(Dunmore St, Dunmore Town; mains $6-13; 8am-2pm Mon-Sat; ) One of the friend-
liest spots in town, this cornerside nook is the place to catch up on gossip, gather travel
advice and relax over coffee, banana pancakes and croissants. Lunch means salads, sand-
wiches and lazy people-watching. Owner Robert Arthur is a one-time screenwriter and
well-known man-about-town; co-owner wife Anna makes a mean key lime tart.
