GETTING AROUND
You can walk or bicycle everywhere in Hope Town. Cars and golf carts are banned along
Bay St but can be rented at the ferry dock (Government Dock) to explore the rest of the
island.

This tiny ribbon of an island is home to a proud and insular 'Conchy Joe' Loyalist culture,
whose origins are audible in their archaic British-tinged accents. Almost as powerful is the
200-year-old boat-building industry that still thrives today.
The island is undoubtedly one of the most conservative parts of the Bahamas. The vil-
lage, with its tidy New England-style cottages, is clean and quiet, its residents polite but
highly reserved. Churches abound, while bikinis and booze are frowned upon (liquor sale
is prohibited on the island - bring your own).
The cay's boatyards have a long-held reputation of employing black laborers, mostly
'Bahaitians' (Haitians born in the Bahamas), who, until recently, were obligated to leave
the island before nightfall.
The wreck of the USS Adirondack, which went down in 1862, lies offshore in 40ft of
water and attracts many divers who head over for the day, as do most visitors.
OUTER OUT ISLANDS
Several smaller islands around Elbow Cay are worth exploring, especially if you
have your own boat. Lubber's Quarters Cay is a 300-acre private island
between Marsh Harbour and Elbow Cay. With no hotels, cars or stores, its per-
fect for secluded beaches and nature hikes. Spitting distance from Elbow Cay,
5-mile-long Tilloo Cay is renowned for its bonefishing flats. The 11 acres of
pristine wilderness is a vital nesting site for sea birds, including the rare and
beautiful tropicbird. South of Tilloo, Pelican Cays Land & Sea Park is a
