In-Depth Information
2,100-acre wonderland of shallow coral gardens, underwater caves and tiny un-
inhabited islands. For the yacht-less, many tour operators and dive shops in
Marsh Harbour and Elbow Cay can arrange trips or boat charters to these is-
lands.
SIGHTS
Albury's Sail Shop SHOPPING
( 7am-5pm Mon-Sat) The stuttering sound of antique sewing machines dominates this
waterfront shop, where multiple generations of Man O' War women are busy stitching
items from cast-off sailcloth. Bright-colored canvas totes, shaving kits and duffles are high
quality and have great retro-preppy charm. Chat with one of the women about their days
sewing sails, which are now made from synthetic material.
Joe Albury's Studio ART, SHOPPING
( 9am-3pm daily) A hand-carved sign points the way to the studio of Man O' War's
finest boatbuilder. Joe crafted traditional Bahamian sailboats with a purist's passion, just as
his great-great-great-uncle Billie Bo did 150 years ago. Beautiful model boats now domin-
ate the studio, along with local artisans' works.
SLEEPING & EATING
There's little in the way of tourist infrastructure here; the island is best visited as a day-
trip or for a longer-term stay. For rental villas or cottages, try Island Home Rentals (
242-365-6048) or Waterways Rentals ( 242-365-6143) .
Albury's Harbour Store and Man O' War Grocery stock outrageously expensive canned
goods and frozen fish and meat. Locals shop on the 'mainland' when they can. Don't plan
on buying anything on a Sunday or during the (long) lunch hour.
Schooner's Landing RENTAL VILLAS $$
( 242-365-6072; www.schoonerslanding.com ; villas daily/weekly $275/1850; )
Three fully-equipped town houses with full kitchen overlook the sea from their tranquil
position northeast of town. The houses come with TV/VCR, private patio, dockage, plus
laundry, bar and barbecue pit; a shared pool adds some sense of community. Beaches lie a
stone's throw in either direction.
