Kamalame Cay RESORT $$$
( 242-368-6281; www.kamalame.com ; villas $840-1500; ) A barge whisks lucky
guests across the water to a 97-acre private island, home to this exquisite luxury resort.
Ultra-private villas are tucked away down paths lined with kamalame trees, wild dilly,
casuarina and love vine. Decor is the height of Merchant Ivory chic, all whitewashed walls
and carved wood furniture and worn oriental rugs, with showers big enough for two. Guests
dine at the open-air Great House, wander the 3-mile-long beach, or take guided diving or
bonefishing trips. But the highlight is really the resort's extraordinary spa. It's perched on
stilts above the ocean, with plexiglass holes in the floor beneath the massage tables for
views down on the aqua water!

FRESH CREEK AREA
Andros Town and Coakley Town make up the Fresh Creek township and are the crossroads
of Central Andros, lying about 30 miles south of Nicholl's Town. A giant plastic crab greets
visitors at Coakley Town on the north side of the creek; the hamlet of Andros Town is on
the south side. Fresh Creek itself extends from the inland depths of Andros. This is an area
popular with divers and anglers, many of whom head here for the facilities at Small Hope
Bay Lodge.
Sights
The jointly run US-UK navies' Atlantic Undersea Test & Evaluation Center (Autec) an-
tisubmarine warfare testing facility is a mile south of town and strictly off-limits; the same
goes for the waters up to 2 miles offshore.
Somerset Beach is 2 miles south of town, and when the tide recedes, the miles-long
beach is extremely deep and splendid. Wading birds patrol the shore, and you can admire
the sand dollars at low tide.
