Sponging was the chief source of livelihood on all the Bahamian islands until
1938, when a fungal blight killed the sponges overnight.
To see a sponger in action, head to the isolated North Andros village of Red
Bays and ask for Sponge Pete, an elderly Greek man who loves to show visitors
the drying process.

highway-side restaurant has sandwiches and fried snackies.
You can stock up at the Food Store behind the gas station on the Queen's Hwy outside
Nicholl's Town.

Getting There & Around
The San Andros Airport serves North Andros. From April through December, the Fast
Ferry travels once weekly from Nassau to Morgan's Bluff. For more information on flights,

The Mastic Point harbor is clogged by sunken boats and is not recommended for private
boaters.
Barry runs a private bus ( 242-471-3276) from the top of North Andros to the bottom
of Central Andros and back daily ($5). Call ahead to request pick-up.
You can rent cars from around $70 per day and there's a gas station at the entrance to
Nicholl's Town. Ask a local for a hookup. For a taxi, call North Andros Taxi (
242-329-2273) .
STAFFORD CREEK AREA
The southern road from Nicholl's Town cuts inland through a very lonely stretch of pine
forest before heading south. It then turns east and leaps over the mouth of Stafford Creek.
On the northern side of the bridge is the disheveled village of Staniard Creek , which sits
