Diving, Snorkeling & Water Sports
Bimini's most unique dive sites include the wreck of the Sapona , a WWI-era cargo steam-
er sank by rum-runners in the 1920s, now lying half in, half out of 20ft of water. a more
advanced wreck dive, the Bimini Barge is a 270ft metal carcass lying in 90ft of water. Just
offshore, the continental shelf plummets 2000ft into the blue-black depths. Divers can ride
the rushing Gulf Stream over the abyss.
There are plenty of excellent shallow reef sites for diving and snorkeling - look out for
stingrays, turtles and even the occasional whale shark. For good DIY snorkeling, try the
beaches off South Bimini's southwestern tip.
ATLANTIS FOUND?
In the shallows off north bimini lies a mysterious sight: a half-mile-long under-
water 'road' of massive limestone blocks, some as big as 15ft across. is the so-
called Bimini Road simply an unusual geometric rock formation? Or were
these stones hewn by an ancient race of men, citizens of the lost city of At-
lantis? While a passionate group of 'Atlantologists' hew to the latter theory, sci-
entists say the formation is merely naturally occurring beachrock. Take a
snorkeling trip to the road, and decide for yourself!
