In-Depth Information
The Bimini Museum ( Click here ) has a number of hemingway photos and
news clippings, and the lobby of the Bimini Big Game Club has a framed letter
from Hemingway to Michael Lerner, founder of the International Game Fishing
Association. The Marlin Cottage at the Bimini Blue Water Resort was another
one of Hemingway's temporary homes - literary pilgrims can still rent it today.
Shark Lab RESEARCH STATION
( 305-274-0628; www.miami.edu/sharklab/index.html ) Sharks adore Bimini, with its
easy Gulf Stream access and mangrove swamps perfect for spawning babies. Meet some
at the 'Bimini Biological Field Station,' AKA 'Shark Lab,' a working research station run
by prominent American shark biologist Dr Samuel Gruber. Come at low tide and a rotating
staff of enthusiastic young volunteers will show you around the lab, then take you out back
to the mudflats to visit the captive baby lemon sharks.
Bimini Nature Trail WALKING TRAIL
On the grounds of the Bimini Sands Resort & Marina, this well-tended, well-marked 1-mile
nature trail passes through forests of palm and poisonwood. Stop and say hi to the caged
green iguana and the Bimini boa, a subspecies of the endemic Bahamian boa.
Fountain of Youth FOUNTAIN
Local legend places Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth some 2 miles south of the ferry
dock on Airport Rd. Seek out the dry limestone hole and see for yourself.
NORTH CAT CAY
Ten miles south of South Bimini, North Cat Cay is a private island run as an ex-
clusive, members-only club, beloved by magnates, Hollywood stars, and the
Duke of Windsor and late former US president Richard Nixon. Nonmembers are
restricted to the marina area. For information on membership, call the Cat Cay
Yacht Club & Marina (
242-347-3565; www.catcayclub.com ) .
