Climbing Mt Alvernia Hermitage
5 Sitting atop the highest peak in the Bahamas (a not-quite-Himalayan 206ft above sea
level), this atmospherically crumbling monastery ( Click here ), on Cat Island, graces many a
postcard. Built by Father Jerome, an itinerant priest and architect, it resembles a miniature
version of the medieval churches of the father's native England. The trek to the hermitage is
truly awe inspiring, as are the panoramic views for the peak. Try to visit just before sunset,
when the pink light illuminates the pale gray stone.
