FiGuRe 5.11 Toon shading, or cel shading, is a method for rendering 3D models to look
like comics while allowing for animation.
FiGuRe 5.12 The images on the left are rendered with the lighting turned on, creating
the highlights and shadows necessary to make them look dimensional. The image on the right
has been toon-shaded.
Different programs have different steps to making the model appear toon-shaded.
The manuals specifically written for the programs have sections devoted to light-
ing models and how to toon-shade them. Numerous sites like MangaHelpers ( www
.mangahelpers.com ) and Second Picture ( www.secondpicture.com ) have online
tutorials as well.
