Figure 11.7 Mean wind profiles in a baroclinic CBL with
250 at the
Boulder Atmospheric Observatory. Despite the very unstable conditions the mean
wind direction changes by 180 degrees between the surface and the inversion base.
From Wyngaard ( 1985 ).

Figure 11.8 Mean profiles measured in the baroclinic CBL inAMTEX. Left: Mean
wind and geostrophic wind; from Garratt et al . ( 1982 ). Right: Turbulent kinematic
stress; from Lenschow et al . ( 1980 ).
Figure 11.8 shows profiles of mean wind, geostrophic wind, and stress mea-
sured during wintertime cold-air outbreaks over the East China Sea in the AMTEX
experiment. In interpreting them we'll write the mean shear balances (11.4) as
f ∂V
,
f ∂U g
.

The curvature of the AMTEX stress profiles, Figure 11.8 , indicates that the left sides
of Eqs. (11.8) are negative, as are the right sides in at least the lower part of the
mixed layer. But as is typical, the data do not allow a definitive test of Eqs. (11.8) .
