Smoothie Garden Solution
Water is heavier than you think! When watering by hand, make
sure you use a lightweight plastic watering container. A two-gallon
watering container will weigh up to sixteen pounds when filled with
water. That's why it is important to have your water source
nearby.
Seeds That Won't Germinate
First, check to see if the seeds are still in the ground. A pest that
you cannot see may be eating your seeds or they may be rotting.
Soil temperatures that are too low or too high can cause poor or
slow seed germination. Make sure you are planting the seed at the
recommended time of year and at the recommended depth. Check
the seed packet for the proper planting depth and replant. If your
seed is old, it may not be viable and you may have to buy some new
seeds.
Unhealthy Plants and Stunted Growth
Many factors can be responsible for plants that don't look as
healthy as they should or are not growing as well as they should.
Low soil fertility or low pH is probably the most common reason.
Give the plants a boost with a side dressing of compost or a manure
or compost tea. Observe what happens over the next few weeks.
Other causes include lack of sunlight, too little or too much water,
and poor drainage. Most vegetable plants need at least six hours of
sunlight each day and an inch of water every week. If nature isn't
cooperating, you may have to step in yourself.
