WHERE TO DINE
For espresso and muffins, we like Cabin Coffee, 141 S. Cannon St. ( & 509/
747-3088 ), which is located just a few blocks from the new Northwest Museum
of Arts & Culture. The Milk Bottle, 802 W. Garland Ave. ( & 509/325-1772 ),
located a few miles north of downtown, is a unique Spokane landmark. It's an
old-time ice-cream parlor fronted by a three-story cement milk bottle. The Milk
Bottle is open Monday through Saturday from 11am to 4pm.
Catacombs Pub INTERNATIONAL Located down in the basement of an
old building in downtown Spokane and only about a block away from the historic
Davenport Hotel, this casual place comes pretty close to living up to its name.
Stone walls and heavy ceiling beams set the tone; the only things missing are the
old bones that catacombs are supposed to have. Designer pizzas are the specialty
here, but there are also good salads. For dessert, don't miss the chocolate calzone.
110 S. Monroe St. & 509/838-4610. Main courses $9-$18. AE, DISC, MC, V. Mon-Thurs 11am-midnight;
Fri 11am-1am; Sat 4pm-1am; Sun 4-11pm.
The Elk INTERNATIONAL The Elk has been around since the early
1900s when it was the Elk Drug Company, supplying medicines and soda foun-
tain treats to neighborhood residents. Today it has been restored and turned into
a chic little pub serving the best of Northwest microbrews along with such unusual
pub fare as grilled lamb sandwiches and seared ahi sandwiches. The excellent
and unusual chicken Caesar soft tacos are our favorite light lunch in Spokane.
During the warmer months, try to get a table out front on the sidewalk patio.
This is one of Spokane's best bets for cheap eats.
1931 W. Pacific Ave. & 509/363-1973. Main courses $6.75-$9.50. MC, V. Sun-Thurs 11am-10pm; Fri-Sat
11am-11pm.
Fugazzi INTERNATIONAL With its blend of contemporary styling
and earthy materials (brick walls and wood floor), this restaurant feels both hip
and cozy, historical yet stylish. It also happens to serve some of the best food in
town. Using the freshest seasonal ingredients, Fugazzi assembles menus that
cater to the city's adventuresome palates. How about spicy Asian-style calamari
to start things out? The menu often has a decided slant toward seafood, which
is usually well prepared, and Asian flavors show up frequently.
1 N. Post St. & 509/624-1133. Reservations recommended. Main courses $7-$9 lunch, $15-$28 dinner.
AE, DC, DISC, MC, V. Tues-Thurs 11:30am-2:30pm and 5-9pm; Fri 11:30am-2:30pm and 5-10pm; Sat
5-10pm.
Herbal Essence Café INTERNATIONAL Popular both as a casual lunch
spot for downtown office workers and as a hip spot for dinner, this restaurant
serves deliciously creative food. At lunch try the south Philly smashed sub or the
crab-and-artichoke sub. At dinner, the Jamaican chicken satay with mango bar-
becue sauce makes a zesty starter. For an entree, the top sirloin with huckleberry
sauce, the salmon with Moroccan spices, and the wild-mushroom ravioli with
smoked chicken are all good bets. This place is just a couple of blocks from
Riverfront Park.
115 N. Washington St. & 509/838-4600. Reservations recommended. Main courses $6-$9 lunch, $14-$24
dinner. MC, V. Mon-Tues 10am-3:30pm; Thurs-Sat 10am-3:30pm and 5:30-9:30pm.
Steam Plant Grill INTERNATIONAL Housed in a renovated for-
mer steam-generating plant that is now a historic landmark, the Steam Plant
Grill is the most unusual restaurant in Spokane. Although utterly contemporary
