site of the original Lagos slave market, documents the tragic history of slavery in the re-
gion, which began at this very spot in 1444. Displays include some 15th-century coins,
African ceramics and beads, and a skeleton—one of several found in a nearby rubbish
dump.

When a price range is given, the lowest is the winter rate and the highest is the August
rate. Lagos is enjoyable for a resort its size, but remember that Salema, a village paradise,
is a short taxi or bus ride away. If you missed the last bus to Salema (leaves Lagos at
20:30), Albergaria Marina Rio and Pensão Residencial Solar are both within 100 yards of
the bus station. Everyone speaks English.

the busy main street immediately in front of the bus station. Its 36 modern, air-con-
