14.5 Summary and Conclusions
Parametric models can be visualized, informed by geometrical modifications as
well as analysis procedures of contextual conditions such as environmental and
structural properties, material behaviour, materialization and fabrication require-
ments, and constructional logic. As Schumacher has stated, the parametric is
intrinsic to all architectural design operations: “Systematic, adaptive variation
and continuous differentiation concern all architectural design tasks from urbanism
to the level of tectonic details ... . on all scales” (Schumacher 2009 ). Thus paramet-
ric schema provide both for the social acquisition of knowledge as well as its
integration in various processes of refinement and adaptation in design.
We have demonstrated the relevance and the need for the development of a
theoretical foundation for an extended model of “social motive” within the frame-
work of crowdsourcing design. Design feedback and knowledge-acquisition in
Pre-design in Post-design can,
in turn, provide a useful framework for the
crowdsourcing of design.
Future development of crowdsourcing design technology integrating shared
parametric representation for the acquisition of expertise and experiential knowl-
edge appears to be a promising paradigm for the development of the “Social-
Motive” Model of Design.
Acknowledgement I would like to thank the students who participated in my graduate course on
“Parametric Design” (Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning, Technion IIT, 2013) for their
enthusiasm, curiosity, and their innovative contributions.
