In-Depth Information
Osaka Airport Transport ( 06-6844-1124; www.okkbus.co.jp/en/index.html ) runs direct lim-
ousine buses between Kyoto and KIX (adult/child ¥2500/1250, 88 minutes). At KIX the
buses leave from the kerb outside the International Arrivals Hall.
In Kyoto, there are pick-up and drop-off points on the southern side of Kyoto Station
OFFLINE MAP ( in front of Avanti Department Store), and at Nijō Station OFFLINE MAP and San-
jō Keihan Station OFFLINE MAP .
CLIMATE CHANGE & TRAVEL
Every form of transport that relies on carbon-based fuel generates CO2, the main cause of human-induced cli-
mate change. Modern travel is dependent on aeroplanes, which might use less fuel per kilometre per person than
most cars but travel much greater distances. The altitude at which aircraft emit gases (including CO2) and
particles also contributes to their climate change impact. Many websites offer 'carbon calculators' that allow
people to estimate the carbon emissions generated by their journey and, for those who wish to do so, to off set
the impact of the greenhouse gases emitted with contributions to portfolios of climate-friendly initiatives
throughout the world. Lonely Planet off sets the carbon footprint of all staff and author travel.
Perhaps the most con-venient option is the MK Taxi Sky Gate Shuttle limousine van
service ( 778-5489; www.mk-group.co.jp/english/shuttle/index.html ) , which will drop you off any-
where in Kyoto for ¥3500 - simply go to the staff counter at the south end of the arrivals
hall of KIX and they will do the rest. From Kyoto to the airport it is necessary to make re-
servations two days in advance and they will pick you up anywhere in Kyoto and take you
to the airport.
A similar service is offered by Yasaka Taxi ( 803-4800) . Keep in mind that these are
shared taxis (actually vans), so you may be delayed by the driver picking up or dropping
off other passengers.
At KIX, the main tourist information counter ( 072-456-6025; 1st fl, International Arrivals
Hall; 8:30am-8:30pm) is operated by the Osaka prefectural government. It's located roughly
in the centre of the international arrivals hall.
If you'd prefer not to lug your bags into Kyoto, there are several luggage delivery ser-
vices that are located in the arrivals hall.
