Creating the Active Alerts report
Before you can start authoring custom reports for System Center Operations Manager, it is
recommended that you create a shared data source that you will use for all your reports.
As we want the data in our report to be in real time, we will create a data source that
points to our operational Operations Manager database.
Tip
Accessing the Operations Manager operational database
Note that accessing the operational database is not supported by Microsoft. This is be-
cause there is a possibility that the database schema might change between release cycles.
Also, in order to prevent locks from occurring when accessing the database (read only), it
is recommended that you always use the NOLOCK query option.
Before we can access the operational database, we need to grant read permissions to a
user account. We will use the SCOM Data Reader account for this purpose. Perform the
following steps:
1. Start SQL Server Management Studio and connect to the SQL server that hosts
the OperationsManager database.
2. Expand Security and Logins , and check whether the SCOM Data Reader account
is present in the list of logins. If not, add the login.
