Sleeping
As in the rest of Goa, prices vary wildly in Panaji depending on supply and demand. Lots
of rock-bottom options pepper 31st January Rd, but most consist of a cell-like room, with
a 9am or earlier checkout, for ?500 or less. Inspect a few before you decide.

The Republica is a story of unex-
plored potential, an architectural beauty that's been left to fall apart - but still it was
booked out when we visited! Ramshackle it may be, but the location is good and the price
acceptable for this part of town.
Afonso Guest House
( 2222359, 9764300165;

;
St Sebastian Rd; r ?1500-2000; )
Run by the
friendly Jeanette, this place in a pretty Portuguese-era townhouse offers spacious, well-
kept rooms with timber ceilings. The little rooftop terrace makes for sunny breakfasting.
It's a simple, serene stay in the heart of the most atmospheric part of town; checkout is
9am and bookings are accepted online but not by phone.

The location alone
makes this place worth a look. It's a little cramped but just steps away from the Church of
Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, with bright, air-con rooms, cable TV and
friendly staff.
