AMAN AT SUMMER PALACE$$$
US$750, ste US$950; ; Xiyuan)
Hard to fault this exquisite hotel, a true candidate
for best in Běijīng. It's located around the corner from the Summer Palace - and part of
the hotel buildings date back to the 19th century and were used to house distinguished
guests waiting for audiences with Empress Cixi. Superbly appointed rooms are contained
in a series of picture-perfect pavilions set around courtyards, and stepping through the im-
posing red gates here is to enter a very different, very hushed and very privileged world.
Choice restaurants, a spa, a library, a cinema, pool, squash courts and, of course, silky-
smooth service round off the refined picture.

Undergoing a long-overdue refit at the time of writing, this
busy hostel is located in an office building and so lacks the character of many other hos-
tels around town. It caters more for domestic travellers (and students from the surrounding
universities) than it does for foreigners. But the staff members are amenable, although you
won't hear much English, and the dorms and rooms, while a little cramped, are clean and
sound enough. But check them before you decide, as some don't have windows.
