Sight Test: You may see some white mold-like mycelium that has formed on the bran. That is
acceptable.Ifyouseeanygreenorblackmold,somethingwentwrongduringthefermentationpro-
cess.
Ifyougetabadbatchofbran,afewthingscouldhavehappened.Mostlikelyairenteredthesys-
tem and the contents didn't have a chance to ferment anaerobically. Other potential causes for the
bad mold are the moisture level (the mixture could have been too wet) or poor-quality EM mother
culture. Donotuseabadbatchofbraninyourbokashisystemtofermentfoodwaste. You can mix
the bad bran into an active aerobic compost pile or bury it in a trench, spray it with a 1:100 diluted
AEM solution, and cover it with six inches of soil.
