the best ways to get a feel for the heart of the city is to pull up a chair at one of the casual
tables strewn around the western edge of the old souq on the semi-pedestrianised Abdul-
lah al-Salem St. If you order kebabs, a generous helping of green leaves, pickles, hummus
and Arabic bread arrives to garnish the meat.

Park Hotel, this is a lovely place to sit and enjoy the view overlooking Kuwait Bay with a
fresh mango juice. A modern version of a traditional Egyptian coffeehouse, it offers ke-
babs and falafel sandwiches, and shish tawouk (chicken kebab). A sheesha costs
KD1.600.

10am-10pm) Breadz offers a deliciously fresh selection of pastries, sandwiches and salads, as
well as fresh fruit juices, tea and coffee. The outdoor terrace overlooking the Sharq marina
makes this a pleasant spot for a snack. The decadent dessert bar is worth a look.

This square restaurant at the end of a pier is like a piece of punctuation along the corniche
- but don't let the rather unattractive steel exterior put you off. Burj Al-Hamam is a great
place to sample Middle Eastern fare in a thoroughly convivial atmosphere among local
families. There's an outer terrace with 270 degrees open to the sea.
