; Government Ave; s/d BD30/40; )
Clean and well fur-
nished, with commodious bathrooms, this is a good bachelor's choice. The 5th floor is
supposedly reserved for women and families, but with its 1st-floor disco and lively Intens-
ity Bar, it has dubious family appeal.
Mashtan$$
HOTEL
( 17 224 466;

; off Government Ave; s/d BD30/40; )
In a cavernous
building, this really tasteless hotel has small but comfortable rooms with huge bathrooms.
It's a favourite with visiting families from the subcontinent.
Delmon International Hotel$$
HOTEL

; Government Ave; s/d BD35/45; )
With a range of seedy
bars, including the dubious 'Diggers', the well-furnished rooms with giant mahogany beds

cushioned sedans, and a family Friday brunch from noon to 5pm for BD10 in the cof-
feeshop.

; Sheikh Hamad Causeway; s/d from BD85/95; )
With distinctive
style and character rare in many international hotels, the Novotel is built like a
qasr
(castle or palace) around elegant central courtyards, and punctuated at the edges by whim-
sical Bahraini wind towers. Commanding a wonderful view of the bay on Sheikh Hamad
Causeway, you can almost forget that the neighbour has built the mother-of-all-tower-
blocks next door.

; King Faisal Hwy; s/d BD91/101; )
Situated across from
the Bahrain National Museum, this low-rise hotel has a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere,
with a large pool area surrounded by bougainvillea. The rooms, arranged almost motel-
