BRUNING MUSEUM
( 28-2110, 28-3440; www.museobruning.com ; Av Huamachuco s/n, Lambayeque; admission S8;
9am-5pm) Situated in Lambayeque, this regional museum, once a regional archaeological
showcase, is now greatly overshadowed by the Museo Tumbas Reales de Sipán. However,
it still houses a good collection of artifacts from the Chimú, Moche, Chavín and Vicus
cultures. Architecture and sculpture lovers may find some interest in the Corbusier-in-
spired building, bronze statues and tile murals adorning the property. Models of several
important sites are genuinely valuable for putting the archaeology of the region into per-
spective. English-speaking guides charge S30.

MUSEO NACIONAL SICÁN
( 28-6469; http://sican.perucultural.org.pe ; Av Batán Grande Cuadra 9 s/n, Ferreñafe; admission S8;
9am-5pm Tue-Sun) Situated in Ferreñafe, about 18km north of Chiclayo, this splendid mu-
seum displays replicas of the 12m-deep tombs found in the area. These were among the
largest ever found in South America, and the most enigmatic: the Lord of Sicán was bur-
ied upside down, in a fetal position, with his head separated from his body. Produced by
the Sicán culture, which had its apogee in the Lambayeque area from AD 750 to 1375,
these unusual exhibits are worth a trip.
Guided tours from Chiclayo travel here as part of a package deal that includes a visit to
the nearby archaeological site of Túcume (which contains remnants of adobe pyramids)
for about S50 per person.

Chachapoyas
041 / POP 22,900 / ELEV 2335 M
From Chiclayo, a winding day's drive inland through the Andes brings you to the charm-
ing settlement of Chachapoyas. Also known as 'Chachas,' this laid-back little town,
washed in white and insulated by a buffer of unpaved roads, is an excellent point from
which to explore the awesome ancient ruins left behind by the Chachapoyas civilization
('People of the Clouds').
The Chachapoyas culture was never fully subdued by the Incas. As a result, the area has
a stunning lack of Inca influence - a rarity in the Andes.
