Museo Tumbas Reales de Sipán
Opened in 2002, this exceptional museum is the pride of northern Peru, containing all of the discoveries made in the
Sipán tombs. This includes impossibly fine turquoise-and-gold ear ornaments, spectacularly reconstructed bead-
work, dazzling pectoral plates representing sea creatures such as the octopus and crab, and mass amounts of ceram-
ics - some of them displayed as they were found. Also on show: narigueras (nose shields). Since emperors were
considered animal-gods, these served the purpose of concealing their all-too-human teeth.
The signage is all in Spanish, but English-speaking guides are available for S20. The museum lies in the town of
Lambayeque, about 10km northwest of Chiclayo. A taxi here will cost about S12.
