PLAZA DE ARMAS AREA
The central plaza is a great place to amble as it fills nightly with sauntering couples, evan-
gelical preachers and an army of underemployed shoe shiners. To the east, find the
cathedral Offline map , which was built in the late 19th century.

MERCADO MODELO
Offline map
(cnr Arica & Balta; 9am-5pm) This fascinating market sprawls for several blocks and is a
thick maze of fresh produce, woven goods, live animals, fish, meats and, most interest-
ingly, the Mercado de Brujos (witch doctors' market) in the southwest corner - a one-stop
shop for whale bones, amulets, snake skins and vials of indeterminate tonics. This is a
good spot to buy huayruros (red and black seeds that bring good fortune) as well as segur-
os (religious charms meant to ward off evil). As in any crowded market: watch your pock-
ets.
